SFU Summer Institute 2014: HEAL Presentations

Hello HEALers,
Hope all is well! I recently received SFU's Summer Institute program schedule and am thrilled to announce that we have several cohort members presenting at this year's event. I have listed the dates and times of the HEAL presentations below. I encourage you all to join us at SFU Surrey from July 10 to July 12! The conference provides a great opportunity to learn more about the Faculty of Education's research community. For program details, click here.

Our current schedule for HEAL student presentations is as follows:
Friday, July 11, 2014
Paula Jaspar
11:50 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. SUR 3250
Narratives: How to Deepen our Personal and Professional Practice
This session examines how health and wellness plays into our social lives, work spaces and family communities. Change begins with an individual’s development of awareness. Narratives play a significant role to inform the self where truths and challenges may lie.

Marie Stevens
1:40 p.m. -  2:30 p.m. SUR 3340
Listening to Hannah: How daily meaning-making informs our practice
Daily experiences that David Applebaum defines as “stop moments” are phenomenological opportunities for meaning-making. Stop moments play a powerful role in informing us as educators. This presentation will describe my experience with this narrative inquiry and participants will engage in exercises that facilitate this process.

Saturday, July 12, 2014
Randal Persad
11:50 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. SUR 2980
Breath, Silence and Relaxation. Ancient pedagogy for the modern professional learning community
Learning communities consist of learners who are able to attune to Self and navigate the myriad complexities of daily stressors. This practical, experiential session introduces breathing, silence and relaxation techniques as essential self-care practices that quiet the mind, restore attention, and facilitate learning.

Coralee Clark
1:40 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. SUR 2740
Finding Vitality in Arts Programs
Arts programs allow students to develop self-confidence, cooperation skills and the ability to express their ideas in a variety of ways. In this workshop, we will explore many possibilities for student engagement through the arts and share specific activities and resources.

I'll also be presenting on Saturday! You can catch me here:
Jacqueline Ashby
10:45 - 11:35 SUR 2740
Crowdfunding for Academics
If you’ve dreamed of launching your own crowdfunded project or are intrigued by the concept, then this workshop is for you! We will cover the basics, including how to communicate your ideas and research on this platform, as well as how to plan, phase and complete a successful campaign.

See you soon!
