APA Style & Referencing

Hello Friends!

I received a great question regarding how you cite a source that is quoted in another source. Here is my response:

I would recommend locating and reading the source’s source to confirm that both the paraphrased content, as well as the context of the paraphrased content, apply to your paper. If this is the case, then cite the reference as you normally would.

However, if you can not locate the reference cited then I would suggest the following:

"Include an entry for the source you have in hand (the journal) in your reference list. In your parenthetical reference after the quote, credit the original source (the book) in addition to citing the secondary source. Use the words "as cited in..." to indicate that you are using material from a secondary source (APA 6.17).

For example:

...Adams asserts in her book Chicken Little that "without a doubt, the chicken came before the egg" (as cited in Smith, 2005)." (Quoted reference linked here)

Hope this helps!

Have a great evening.
