This was just one of the in-class assignments that we did during our hike
on Bowen Island.  The sampling is to remain nameless as a few of the students
preferred the anonymity.  Here is a little description of what they had
to do...
Five Senses Assignment
As we went along our walk, I asked that the students concentrate on the
different sensory experiences that crossed our path.  Many of us often
rely greatly on our sight to experience the world, while overlooking our
other means of corporeal abilities.  However, some of us are sensitive
the experience of a familiar smell, sound, taste or sensation which can
invoke a distant memory.  This week the task was to create a meditative
experience through guided imagery.  The goal was to describe each of the
experiences from their walk across each of the five senses.
However,
the twist to this was that in creating the guided imagery narratives
the students were to assume for each of the senses that they described
that their audience was not familiar with that particular sensory
modality.  For example: If they were describing sound, they
would have to approach their descriptions from the perspective that
their audience had no experience with sound, and did not have the
ability to hear.  In this respect, they had to do their best to describe
the experience of sound through one or more of the remaining sense(s).
